A word from James Richter(Sound Designer for Lie with Me):
I designed the music to compliment the lighting design and movement of the actors during scene transitions, while connecting the emotional punctuation of the end of one scene to the start of the next one. Davis Campbell's set design used the full available width and depth of the stage, and Joe Banno positioned the actors to emphasize that space. The music also acknowledges the space by spreading the 4 instruments of the string quartet far apart in the stereo field. Visualizing the actors on the stage informed my compositions, as I began to associate the viola (far left) with Susan, the 2nd violin with Carla (far right), the cello with Ian and Stan (center front) and the violin with Deanna (center back).

Carla Comes Home
Traveling music to represent Carla's sense of agitation at coming back to the Wilson home, culminating with strong open chords as Ian and Stan circle each other like matadors prior to meeting one another.
Did They?
Ian's good nature will be tested as he tries to process the shocking revelation he just heard from Susan, echoing in his mind like a persistent pest.
5:00 in the Morning
The tension of Carla and Ian's confrontation melts away as the scene changes to the early morning hours, when Susan comes home from her new job to find Stan skulking in the living room with a half-empty bottle of Scotch at his side.
Goodbye, Deanna
With irreparable personal damage done to all the characters, Susan timidly appears at Deanna's death bed, hoping for some closure before her mother passes.
